At the last XReco meeting in Turin, 20 XReco members tested the MVPs of the XReco tools. The aim is to simplify 3D reconstructions, digital storytelling and asset management in the future. This article explains the test results and the important decisions to ensure that the official test phase in May 2025 is well prepared for media, XR and cultural professionals.

Hands-on Testing of XReco Tools
XReco is developing a new data-driven ecosystem for the media industry that will simplify data exchange, search and discovery. The aim is to support the creation and (re)use of location-based 2D and 3D content and the creation of XR experiences. At the heart of the technology is an AI-based Neural Media Repository (NMR), which will enable content sharing across organisations and novel strategies for data monetisation and rights management. A set of AI-based media transformation services will be built around the NMR to produce novel media and XR experiences. The developed technology will be validated in application scenarios for news media and location-based information and entertainment content with applications in tourism and the automotive industry.
On the first day, the XReco members had the opportunity to subject the MVPs developed by XReco Tools to a critical internal test for the first time. The test preparations were organised and led by Marieta Caballero Baeza (Visyon Mediapro), who is the project manager for work package 5 (technical developments). These five MVPs were tested in alternating groups:
- AR-CMS
- XRCapsule
- Unity Authoring Tool
- 3D-Reconstruction
- Orchestrator

The internal tests aimed to simulate real test processes and gather initial impressions. The teams also discussed the potential applications of the XReco tools for the tourism and media industry. For example, how the NMR Neural Media Repository (AI) can be used to create new opportunities to search for a tourist object such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris as a high-quality 3D model and simply use it for your own 3D scenes.

Valuable Insights and Next Steps of XReco
In the second round, the teams analyzed specific functions, measured the usage times, and reviewed the results. The findings were promising. As expected, there were many valuable insights and some bugs. In the follow-up sessions, the participants discussed technical issues in order to find solutions. With the goal of finalizing the XReco tools as MVPs by the end of April, time is running short!

How to Recruit Testers?
The second day focused on preparations for the official test phase in May, where neutral users will get to experience the MVPs of the XReco tools for the first time. The target audience includes professionals from the media and XR industries, as well as content creators and asset managers from museums and the tourism sector. To ensure strong participation, Elle Langer (XRBB) presented the communication and dissemination strategy, while Bas van Gunst (Sound) led a session on exploitation planning.
Refining Strategy and Looking Ahead
The third day was dedicated to refining the user test strategy and communication approach. A two-hour discussion provided further clarity on the targeted tester groups and the best way to engage them.
Although there was no time for sightseeing in Turin, the three-day meeting was filled with valuable insights, strong collaboration, and a clear vision for the next phase: the official XReco testing.
